The shock absorber piston rod plays an important role in many mechanical systems. It connects the piston to the rest of the shock absorber and is responsible for transmitting motion and regulating the damping effect. Without the piston rod, the function of the shock absorber will be seriously affected, and the vehicle’s ride smoothness and comfort will be greatly reduced.

The shock absorber piston rod is particularly important in the automotive suspension system. It not only helps absorb road shocks, but also ensures that the vehicle remains stable during driving. With the development of the automotive industry, the demand for high-performance shock absorbers continues to increase, and the market for shock absorber piston rods continues to grow. It is expected that the demand for shock absorber piston rods will continue to rise in the next few years, reflecting its importance in automobiles and other mechanical systems.

In shock absorbers, piston rod design and material selection are critical to ensure durability and reliability in high-pressure and high-friction environments. Through effective vibration reduction, piston rods help extend the service life of vehicles and mechanical equipment and improve overall performance.

What is a shock absorber piston rod?

The shock absorber piston rod is an important component inside the shock absorber. It is usually a long rod connected to the shock absorber piston. The main function of the piston rod is to transmit the movement of the piston to the outside of the shock absorber and adjust the flow of oil inside the shock absorber through its movement, thereby achieving the shock absorption effect.

Main features and functions of shock absorber piston rod

Connection function: The piston rod connects the piston to the external structure of the shock absorber, so that the movement of the piston inside the shock absorber can affect the external shock absorption effect.

Motion transfer: When the vehicle is driving on an uneven road, the up and down movement of the wheels causes the piston rod to move up and down. The movement of the piston rod causes the piston to move in the oil, thereby achieving shock absorption.

Oil flow regulation: The movement of the piston rod causes the oil to flow through the holes or valves on the piston, regulating the flow rate and direction of the oil, thereby controlling the damping characteristics of the shock absorber.

Wear resistance and strength: Since the piston rod is subjected to greater pressure and friction in the shock absorber, it is usually made of high-strength and wear-resistant materials to ensure its reliability and durability in long-term use.

Sealing function: The piston rod is usually equipped with a sealing device to prevent oil leakage and maintain the pressure inside the shock absorber.

In short, the shock absorber piston rod plays a vital role in the operation of the shock absorber and directly affects the driving comfort and stability of the vehicle.

Key Takeaways

  • A piston rod links the piston to other parts, helping energy move easily and making machines work well.
  • Check and care for the piston rod often to avoid harm and keep machines working their best.
  • Piston rods are made from strong materials like steel and titanium, picked for their strength and use in certain jobs.
  • Knowing how piston rods work with other parts is important to keep machines safe and reliable.
  • Piston rods are key to making machines last longer, work better, and perform well.

Introduction to piston rod technology

The piston rod is hard chromium plating on steel substrate surface coated with a thick layer of chromium plating and its thickness is in commonly 10 to 30 microns , using the characteristics of chromium improve parts’ performance ,such as hardness, wear resistance, heat resistance and corrosion resistant .

The process features of hard chrome plated piston rod:
1) the cathode current efficiency is as high as 25% ~ 35%, and the deposition rate is very fast.
2) high hardness (900 ~ 1200HV), uniform and dense network cracks, good abrasion resistance;Microcracks can be produced, and the number of microcracks can reach 800-2000 pieces/cm (according to the need), and improve the anti-corrosion ability.
3) good dispersion ability of the plating bath, uniform thickness of the coating, not easy to produce the phenomenon of rough blister tumor, and the appearance of chromium layer is bright and smooth;
4) the coating has strong bonding strength with the substrate, and the pretreatment is similar to the traditional technology, and the operation is easier than the traditional process;
5) the content of trivalent chromium in the bath is allowed to be wide, and it usually does not need to discontinue electrolysis for trivalent chromium;
6) the plating solution contains no fluoride, no rare earth elements, and no corrosion of the workpiece without low power.

Working principle of piston rod in shock absorber

The working principle of the piston rod in the shock absorber is mainly to absorb and dissipate impact energy through the flow of liquid and pressure changes, thereby reducing the vibration and impact generated by the vehicle during driving.

Structural composition

Shock absorbers are usually composed of a housing, a piston, a piston rod, oil, etc. The piston rod is connected to the piston, and the piston moves in the oil inside the shock absorber.

Movement process

When the vehicle is driving on an uneven road, the wheels will be impacted, causing the vehicle body to vibrate up and down. At this time, the piston rod moves up and down with the movement of the vehicle body.

Fluid flow

The movement of the piston rod causes the piston to move up and down in the fluid, which flows through holes or valves in the piston. Depending on the design of the shock absorber, the speed and direction of the fluid flow will affect the damping effect.

Energy absorption

When the piston rod moves downward, the oil is compressed and flows out through the valve, slowing down the movement of the piston and absorbing the impact energy. Conversely, when the piston rod moves upward, the oil flows into the piston chamber through the valve and continues to play a shock absorbing role.

Damping effect

The damping characteristics of the shock absorber can be achieved by adjusting the size of the valve and the viscosity of the oil. Different damping characteristics can adapt to different driving conditions and needs.

Through the above process, the piston rod plays a key role in the shock absorber, effectively reducing the vibration of the vehicle during driving and improving driving comfort and safety.
